Still in Summer Survival Mode? There’s Still Time to Reset
Summer started with the best intentions. The backpacks got dropped by the door, the schedule opened up, and you told yourself you’d get organized “once things settle down.”
It’s been a month. Things have not settled down.
If your home feels like it’s been taken over — mystery towels on every surface, sunscreen bottles multiplying on the counter, and a pile by the door that no one can identify — you are squarely in the thick of summer chaos. And you are not alone.
Here’s the thing: you’re only about a third of the way through summer break. There are still two
solid months ahead, and a simple reset right now can make all the difference between surviving summer and actually enjoying it.
Reclaim Your Entryway
After a month of in-and-out, your drop zone has probably become a drop everything zone. Spend
15 minutes pulling out what doesn’t belong — shoes that haven’t moved in weeks, bags from that one weekend trip, the mystery items that have claimed squatter’s rights. Give every summer essential (flip flops, sunscreen, pool bag) a designated spot and watch how much smoother the daily chaos flows.
Wrangle the Summer Gear
By now you know what your family is actually reaching for and what’s just taking up space. Sports equipment from activities that fizzled out, towels without a home, outdoor toys scattered everywhere — this is the moment to edit. Keep what’s being used, store or donate what isn’t.
Reset One Space That’s Driving You Crazy
You don’t need to organize your entire house. You just need to fix the one space that’s creating
the most daily friction. The kitchen counter? The mudroom floor? The bathroom the kids have
claimed? Pick one, spend an hour, and feel the difference.
Two Months Is Plenty of Time
There’s a tendency to throw up our hands at this point in summer and wait until back-to-school to get organized. But two months of living in clutter adds up — and back-to-school season brings its own wave of chaos.
A reset now means a smoother finish to summer and a much easier transition in August.
